The White Huns Who Burned Gandhara | Hepthalites, Mihirakula & the Fall of Buddhist Gandhara

In the 5th and 6th centuries CE, a storm swept out of Central Asia — the White Huns, history's Hepthalites. Their Indian branch, the Alchon Huns, stormed into Gandhara under Toramana (r. c. 493–515) and his son Mihirakula (r. c. 515–533), the ruler remembered for burning Buddhist monasteries and persecuting the faith. This cinematic documentary traces their origins on the steppe, the rise of the Hephthalite empire in Bactria, the destruction of Gandhara, and their defeat by Yasodharman of Malwa at the Battle of Sondani (528 CE) — recorded on the Mandasor pillar inscription (532 CE). Featuring the accounts of Xuanzang, Kalhana's Rajatarangini, and the myth-vs-evidence debate on what really happened to Gandhara.
