Jeep Safari in the Kanha Zone During my jeep safari in the Kanha Zone of Kanha Tiger Reserve, I discovered why this part of the reserve is synonymous with vast grasslands and the iconic hard-ground barasingha. The beautiful meadows were once villages whose residents were voluntarily relocated to create better wildlife habitat. Today, these nutrient-rich grasslands provide ideal grazing grounds for barasingha and have become the most important refuge for this rare deer. I was particularly surprised to learn that barasingha are still counted daily in Kanha as part of their ongoing conservation programme. Our route passed through the Khatiya Gate and much of the Kisli Zone before reaching Kanha. The rocky Banjari landscape of Kisli is known for leopards, though none appeared that day. Instead, we enjoyed an Oriental Honey-buzzard, a specialist at raiding bee and wasp nests. Ashu explained that fallen honeycombs are often relished by sloth bears, offering a delightful example of nature’s interconnectedness. Within 20 minutes of entering Kanha, we encountered a playful family of Indian jackals. Their mischievous cubs seemed aware of our presence but completely unbothered by it. We also spotted several female barasingha, including one lone female mingling with chital, perhaps seeking the safety of their company. A large breeding enclosure built for barasingha caught my attention. I was told that, after repairs, it may be used for breeding other threatened species such as blackbuck. Orchids blooming on a tree in June added an unexpected splash of beauty. A close encounter with a Crested Serpent Eagle was another highlight. Calls of langurs and deer suggested a predator nearby, but the tiger remained elusive. We did, however, see a 300–400-year-old banyan tree and a pair of tiny scops owls. Hearing about a nearby sloth bear briefly raised my hopes; my only previous wild sighting had been in Satpura, of a mother carrying her cub. Ashu also shared stories of Kanha’s resident tigers, including dominant Junior Bajrang and his brother Balwan. The safari culminated at Kanha’s remarkable visitor complex, arguably the finest I have encountered in an Indian national park. Its museum, interpretation centre, restored 1930s British-era buildings, giant barasingha-antler gate, souvenir shops, canteen and immaculate facilities make it an attraction in itself.
