From the shores of Lake Skadar to the mountains above Kotor, Montenegro delivers some memorable days on the bike. In EP4, Charlotte and I continue our bicycle journey from the Albanian border toward Croatia, following sections of the EuroVelo 8 route through quiet villages, rocky valleys, and winding mountain roads. There are big climbs, a long descent to the sea, and plenty of small discoveries along the way.

In This Episode
We begin along the western side of Lake Skadar, riding between the mountains and the water. Comfortable guesthouses, morning coffee, and a few roadside turtle rescues help set the pace. These are the moments that make traveling by bicycle so rewarding: moving slowly enough to notice the little things, with time to stop when something catches our attention.
Leaving the lake behind, we head toward Cetinje, Montenegro’s former royal capital. It’s only about 25 miles, but with roughly 4,000 feet of climbing, it’s a full day’s ride. Along the way, we pass rocky hillsides, old stone buildings, and a village memorial remembering local people lost in wars and political violence. Once in Cetinje, we park our bikes in a private courtyard and spend the afternoon exploring the town’s walking streets, gardens, and parks.
The next morning brings more climbing before the big payoff: a long descent toward Kotor and the coast. Tight corners, tunnels, and traffic bottlenecks keep things interesting as we work our way down from the mountains. Then the scenery—and the pace—changes again as we ride past little harbors, boats, and waterfront communities.
By the time we reach the Croatian border, we’ve squeezed in a swim and have plenty to reflect on. This stretch of Montenegro brings together the hard work of loaded bicycle touring and its simplest pleasures: a comfortable room, a good breakfast, a quiet road, and the satisfaction of finally heading downhill.
