Johanna – "Utgarda's Illusion" · Cinematic Viking Version · Nordic Rock

A museum curator working late discovers a runic drinking horn. When UV light crosses its surface, the runes answer — and she is pulled through into the hall of Utgard itself. There she becomes what the runes already knew she was: a völva, a seeress, invisible to all in the hall. She watches Thor fail three contests that are not contests. She sees the ocean behind the horn, the World Serpent beneath the cat, the weight of all time in an old woman's grip. She understands every illusion before it is named. When Utgard-Loki reveals the truth and the hall dissolves, she is the last thing standing. She returns to the museum. The horn's runes go dark, one by one. "Utgarda's Illusion" is based on the episode from the Prose Edda in which Thor and his companions visit the fortress of Utgard-Loki and face three contests that seem like defeats — each one a disguised impossible victory. The song is part of Johanna's Nordic mythological direction. Two versions of this song exist: ▶ Cinematic Viking Version (this video) - cinematic video ▶ Stage Version (modern setting) - live performance / stage concept video    • Johanna – Utgarda's Illusion · Stage Versi...   LYRICS What you see in the hall of giants is never what it seems. The hall of Utgard was towering high, Carved out of stone right under the sky. The giant smiled down from his carved wooden seat: "Show us your strength if you wish to eat!" They offered a horn that was filled to the brim, A contest of drinking for warriors grim. He drank till his breath was beginning to fail, But the water stayed level inside of the grail! He fought with the old crone until he was bent, Unaware of the magic the fortress had sent! You drank from the ocean! You lifted the snake! You made the deep roots of the universe shake! Old age was the opponent that forced you to knee, Yet you moved the whole tide of the endless gray sea! Utgard’s illusions fall down in despair, When the thunder discovers the trick in the air! The gray cat he lifted was Jörmungandr’s spine, Stretched to the clouds in a terrifying line. The old woman Elli had conquered all kings, Yet Thor stood his ground through her icy cold rings. You failed the tests, Thunderer... or did you? The giant turned pale when he looked at the shore! The ocean was lower than ever before! The hall vanished into the mist and the dust, Leaving no castle to praise or to trust! You drank from the ocean! You lifted the snake! You made the deep roots of the universe shake! Old age was the opponent that forced you to knee, Yet you moved the whole tide of the endless gray sea! Utgard’s illusions fall down in despair, When the thunder discovers the trick in the air! Magic fades away... ...but the ocean remembers the drink.
