Turkmenistan is one of Central Asia’s most mysterious countries—a land of white-marble avenues, strict everyday rules, blocked social media and a desert crater that has burned for more than 50 years.
This documentary explores Ashgabat, where hundreds of marble-clad buildings rise above unusually quiet streets, then heads into the Karakum Desert to see the Darvaza gas crater, known around the world as the “Gates of Hell.” We also look at the country’s unusual car-color restrictions, tourism rules, low transport and fuel costs, and the sharp contrast between state-built grandeur and daily life.
Beyond the capital, discover Yangykala Canyon, the underground lake of Kow Ata, ancient Merv, traditional Turkmen carpets and the metallic-gold Akhal-Teke horse. Turkmenistan is cheap in surprising ways, rich in natural gas, culturally distinctive and difficult for outsiders to explore freely.
