Lucca’s Homecoming: Marine Corps Working Dog Reunites With Her Original Handler

Marine Corps working dog Lucca K458 served courageously until she was seriously injured in Afghanistan and lost her left front leg. Marine Juan Rodriguez—the handler who was with Lucca when she was injured—then accepted responsibility for escorting her to Helsinki, Finland, where she would be reunited with her original handler. When Juan contacted American Airlines hoping to find discounted military airfare, the airline transformed his request into an extraordinary tribute. American Airlines donated their travel, upgraded Juan and Lucca to first class, and brought employees and supporters together at Chicago O'Hare International Airport to honor Lucca before their departure. Their flight left beneath a ceremonial water-cannon salute. This short documentary captures Lucca’s sendoff, Juan’s devotion and the remarkable response of people determined to honor a Marine hero. Lucca’s legacy continues today.
