You don't have to be first. 🎋 A stream is moving through a green bamboo grove, slowly, over smooth stones. A wandering ronin has set his sword and hat down on the moss beside it. Nothing here is trying to arrive before anything else. This piece is inspired by "RYŪSUI FUSŌSEN" (流水不争先) — flowing water does not race to be first. It is an old Zen line about a stream. Water always reaches the sea. It never gets there by overtaking the water in front of it. It arrives because it keeps moving, at the only speed it has. Most of the tiredness in a working life is not from the work. It is from the checking — who is ahead, who started younger, who did it faster, whether you are behind. None of that made anything move any quicker. Let the others go past. It costs you nothing. The stream you are in is still going, and it is going where you are going. Shakuhachi breathes long and low, at the pace of something unhurried. Koto lands one note at a time, the way water passes one stone at a time. Nothing here is racing you.
