This is how I would approach learning from HSK textbooks, especially those long and difficult texts. This is also exactly what I do with my own students who use the book.
First, I talk about the whole story in much easier language — simple, spoken Chinese — which is very different from what you see on paper, the written Chinese.
Being able to talk about the story first helps you understand the text as a whole, instead of struggling sentence by sentence.
If the story is plot‑centered, keep the plot clearly in your mind. (Of course, not all stories are like that.)
Once you have the big picture, you can start learning the difficult words — mostly written Chinese expressions — in Chinese, and learn how to explain them in colloquial Chinese. This is the second step.
Then, read the story a few more times. As you become familiar with the new advanced vocabulary, the whole text will become clearer and clearer.
So the process looks like this:
1 Get a general idea of the story as a whole
2 Learn to talk about the story in colloquial Chinese
3 Learn to explain difficult words in easier Chinese
4 Read the entire story several more times
5 Eventually, you will understand the whole thing
Even at that stage, I still would not expect my students to do any of the tasks in the textbook. Understanding the new words is only the beginning — most exercises in the lesson following the texts are designed to test how accurately you can already use those words in sentences, where to place them, or how to choose between similar words.
One cannot freely and accurately use difficult written Chinese words right away just after learning them in one text.
It takes many more contexts to fully understand a word, not to mention using it correctly.
The best exercise is to read a few more similar texts on the same topic or story, with the same new words appearing again. This helps consolidate your understanding. This is truly the best practice one can do to fully learn the new vocabulary in each textbook lesson.
