In this video, I travel from Sydney to Brisbane using my Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card, my Seniors Card, and my QLD Translink Go card. I use every travel hack in the book to complete the journey for just $5.50!
The trip starts at Central Station on a weekday, where I catch the 05:20 service to Newcastle Interchange. From there, I transfer to a service to Dungog. The fare for this entire section is just $2.50 using a Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card. Don’t have one? You can apply beforehand even if you are from interstate. Before leaving on the trip, I reserved a seat on the XPT from Dungog to Casino. To get this ticket for just $2.50, you need to book 7 days or less before departure. Just $2.50 for such a long distance sounds far-fetched, but it’s true! Even if you are from interstate and have a Seniors Card, you can take advantage of these $2.50 fares.

After the train reached Casino, I transferred to a coach through to Tweed Heads—all covered by that same $2.50 booking.
Upon arriving at Tweed Heads, I hopped on a local Gold Coast bus to Broadbeach South, followed by the light rail to Helensvale. Finally, I took the train from Helensvale to Roma Street Station. Thanks to current fare incentives, the cost from Tweed Heads all the way to Brisbane was just 50 cents!
I also suggest in the video that you might like to break up the journey at Coffs Harbour. I have created a separate video on how to do that here: • XPT TRAVEL: Break your journey at Coffs Ha...
Happy travels!
