On the morning of March 17, 1987, two Colorado Springs patrol officers found 20-year-old Army Specialist Darlene Krashoc behind a restaurant on South Academy Boulevard. She had last been seen leaving a nearby club between midnight and 1 a.m., and she had been killed somewhere else, a place investigators have never located. Hundreds of interviews produced nothing. The case went cold for 32 years.
This is the full account of what happened to Darlene Krashoc, and of the decision one 1987 detective made that eventually solved it: preserving evidence no laboratory on Earth could read at the time. It covers the failed searches of the FBI's DNA database, the 2017 phenotype composites, the genealogy work that identified a man with no criminal record, the discarded cup that confirmed it, and the 2021 trial, along with the questions the verdict never answered.
