The quickest way to make your puppy miserable on walks? Expect them to be perfect. When Jasper first started going on walks at 11 weeks old, there was a lot to learn: leads, heel, follow, wait, distractions… and, of course, lizards. But we've also learnt something along the way: This is Jasper's first time in the world too. Every smell, puddle, stick, cat and patch of grass is something he's discovering for the very first time. So yes, we're teaching him to listen and building towards giving him more freedom, but we don't want every walk to feel like an obedience exam. Sometimes he needs to practise. Sometimes he needs to listen. And sometimes he just needs to be a puppy. From his first walk to the puppy hops, zoomies, rainy walks and little moments we're already starting to treasure, this is our journey of learning to walk together. Because the goal isn't a perfect dog.
