Welcome to Future Forge! In July of 1978, somebody towed a five-ton steel drum covered in blunt triangular teeth across 500 acres of dead rangeland near Fort Huachuca in southern Arizona. That ground had been overgrazed for close to a century and driven over by military vehicles on top of it. The imprinted land and the land beside it were then seeded with the same perennial grasses under the same desert sky. Ten months later, somebody went out and weighed what had come up. The unimprinted ground had produced 50 pounds of grass per acre. The imprinted ground had produced 2,900. The strange machine had done something that decades of conventional land management could not: it gave the desert a way to hold onto water long enough for grass to return. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌎 What do you think of this approach?
