Learn the Simple Present Tense in English grammar with clear explanations, sentence structures, rules, and practical examples. In this lesson by My Language Classes, you will learn how to use the simple present tense to describe daily routines, habits, repeated actions, general truths, and facts. You will also learn how to form affirmative sentences, negative sentences, and questions correctly.
What Is the Simple Present Tense?
The simple present tense describes habits, routines, general truths, and situations that are generally true. For example, "I study English every day" describes a regular activity, while "The Earth revolves around the Sun" expresses a scientific fact.
Common time expressions include always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never, every day, and every week.
Examples:
→ I wake up at six every morning.
→ She reads books in the evening.
→ They play football on Sundays.
→ We usually eat dinner at home.
→ Water freezes at zero degrees Celsius under standard atmospheric pressure.
Simple Present Tense Rules and Sentence Structure
The basic structure of an affirmative sentence is:
Subject + base form of the verb + other information.
Examples:
→ I speak English.
→ You work hard.
→ We learn grammar.
→ They live in Delhi.
With he, she, it, and other third-person singular subjects, we generally add -s or -es to the main verb.
Examples:
→ He speaks English.
→ She works in a school.
→ Rahul studies every evening.
→ The bus arrives at eight.
Most verbs take -s, as in works, reads, and plays. Verbs ending in -sh, -ch, -ss, or -x generally take -es, as in washes, watches, passes, and fixes. When a consonant comes before -y, the -y usually changes to -ies, as in studies and tries. However, we write plays and enjoys when a vowel comes before -y.
The verb have changes to has with third-person singular subjects. For example, "I have a book" becomes "She has a book."
Negative Sentences
Use do not or does not before the base form of the main verb to make a negative sentence.
Structure: Subject + do not/does not + base verb.
Examples:
→ I do not drink coffee.
→ They do not work on Sundays.
→ He does not play cricket.
→ She does not speak Japanese.
Remember that the main verb stays in its base form after does not. "She does not like tea" is correct, while "She does not likes tea" is incorrect.
Questions in the Simple Present Tense
Form questions by placing do or does before the subject.
Structure: Do/Does + subject + base verb + other information?
Examples:
→ Do you speak English?
→ Do they live here?
→ Does he work in an office?
→ Does she study every day?
Question words such as what, where, when, why, and how can also be used.
→ Where do you live?
→ What does she teach?
→ When do they arrive?
→ Why does he study English?
The main verb remains in its base form after does. Therefore, "Does he play football?" is correct, not "Does he plays football?"
Simple Present vs. Present Continuous
The simple present tense describes regular activities, while the present continuous often describes actions happening now.
→ I work every day. This describes a regular activity.
→ I am working now. This describes an action happening at the moment.
Common mistakes include forgetting -s or -es with he, she, or it and adding -s to the main verb after does or does not. Understanding these rules will help you form accurate English sentences.
