Today’s adventure took me along the *PR 8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço*, a breathtaking coastal trail on the easternmost tip of Madeira. This dramatic promontory is named after the caravel *São Lourenço*, which belonged to João Gonçalves Zarco, one of the discoverers of Madeira in the 15th century.
Unlike the lush levada walks in the island’s interior, the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço cuts through a stark, semi-arid landscape of volcanic rock and windswept headlands. The trail meanders across striking cliffs, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean on both sides. Throughout the walk, I was treated to panoramic vistas of the rugged coastline, crashing waves, and unique geological formations shaped by volcanic forces over millions of years.
The highlight of the trail was reaching the viewpoint near the lighthouse, *Farol da Ponta de São Lourenço*, where the Atlantic breeze was invigorating and the sweeping seascapes were simply unforgettable. From here, you can truly appreciate the raw, untamed beauty of this protected nature reserve—one of the few places on Madeira where you’ll find such open, windswept terrain.
