Every country has a page it would rather you didn't read.
In 1937 a Soviet official stood next to Stalin at the opening of a canal. Three years later he had been executed, and soon he wasn't in the photo either. France spent decades calling a war in Algeria "events". Canada's railway was finished with a famous photo of the last spike, without the roughly fifteen thousand Chinese workers who built its hardest stretch, and then charged their families up to $500 each to come in. Japan renamed an island and took decades to admit people already lived there. Spain passed a law to forget. Tulsa burned 35 blocks of Greenwood in sixteen hours and left it out of the schoolbooks for eighty years. In China, a date in early June still can't be written down, so people write "May 35th". Britain shipped its most embarrassing colonial files home, or dropped them in the sea. And Germany, the star student of facing up to its past, had a missing page of its own.
But somebody always keeps a copy.
