Mashabe Band - Mashabe Volume One - Full Zambian Album (1985)

This particular copy is the Zimbabwean pressing with a black and white cover. Songs on the album are sung in Bemba, Nyanja and Lenje. Mashabe Band gets a mention in Leonard Koloko's Zambian Music Legends, but not a lot of specific information is provided. Online information tends to parrot Koloko so it's hard to fill in the gaps. Led by James Chisenga, the band had a spiritual name and usually performed in red, white and black striped paint and grass skirts. Much of their music revolved around traditional culture and lifestyles. The band had three albums in the late 80's and a number of singles. Most of the band members passed away by the late 90's with the last, Davies Chipampe likely dying before the turn of the century.
