They draw on several characteristic elements of traditional chant, including free rhythm, a relatively narrow melodic range, speech-like Latin phrasing, predominantly monophonic writing, and the spacious resonance of a church or monastery. These works are not intended as historical reconstructions of medieval chant, nor do they strictly follow the rules of any single Gregorian mode. Instead, they offer a contemporary interpretation of Gregorian melodic language, modal color, and prayerful atmosphere, with some freedom taken beyond traditional modal practice. May these three pieces be heard as a single Marian meditation — like a quiet prayer echoing through an ancient monastery.
