The Smell That Forced London to Change

In the summer of 1858, London’s sewage problem reached the windows of Parliament. Chemical-soaked curtains could not hide it. This is the story of the Great Stink: the mistaken theory of miasma, John Snow’s water evidence, and the political pressure that helped turn Joseph Bazalgette’s plans into a vast sewer network. Follow the waste from a Victorian house through gravity-fed tunnels, pumping stations and tidal outfalls—and discover what the new system still did not fix. Original illustrated history from Badly Drawn History. Artwork and diagrams are simplified explanatory reconstructions. What everyday system do you only notice when it breaks?
