On Osterstrasse in Hamelin, a carved timber beam on the Pied Piper's House names the day of Saints John and Paul, 26 June 1284, and says that 130 children born in the town were led away by a piper dressed in many colours and lost at Calvary by the Koppen. It mentions no rats and no unpaid bill. This long, dark history for sleep follows what the records really say about the children of Hamelin, and how a town's grief became a children's tale. Along the way: the Latin note in a friar's book at Lüneburg, found in 1936, with its finely dressed young man and his silver pipe; the lost church window and the prayer in red ink; the New Gate stone of 1556 and Fincel's devil; the Count of Zimmern's chronicle, where the rats and the unpaid fee first appear; Augustin von Mörsperg's visit of 1592; Verstegan's pied piper of 1605 and the London ships bound for Barbados and Virginia; the battle of Sedemünder theory; the Brothers Grimm and Robert Browning's poem for a sick boy; the dancing, crusade, plague and landslide theories; Jürgen Udolph's village names in the Uckermark and Pomerania; the jubilees of 1884 and 1934; and the play that Hamelin still performs every summer Sunday. Told calmly, with the evidence named, for listening late at night or drifting off to sleep. Where are you listening from tonight, and which version of the Pied Piper did you first hear?
