With so many podcasts out there, it’s easy to assume making one is easy. But creating a podcast people will actually listen to takes research, good questions, compelling storytelling, and editing skills. At the College of Charleston, students in the Audio Investigations capstone spend a year developing and producing original podcasts. On this episode of Speaking Of … College of Charleston, Ryan Milner, professor and chair of the Department of Communication, and alumna Maddie Jacarusco discuss how the course prepares students for professional life and builds relationships that continue after graduation. Jacarusco shares how she created In Loving Memory, a documentary about maintaining connections with loved ones who have died. Drawing on the loss of her mother, she reflects on telling personal stories, interviewing others about grief and finding support through classmates and faculty mentorship. In this conversation: How students turn personal interests into compelling audio documentaries. What makes a good interview and how to ask better questions. How recording, editing and peer feedback strengthen storytelling. Why a finished podcast can be a valuable part of a professional portfolio. How faculty mentorship continues after graduation. Where AI fits into creative work and why original thinking matters. “The relationship doesn’t end when you cross the Cistern,” says Ryan Milner.
