In 612 BC, the mightiest city on Earth burned. Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, fell after a three-month siege, and within a few centuries even its name was forgotten.
In this video we follow Nineveh from its first settlements to its golden age under Sennacherib and Ashurbanipal, to the alliance of Babylon and the Medes that destroyed it. We look at the world's first great royal library, the Epic of Gilgamesh and its flood story, the Greek soldier who marched past the ruins without knowing what they were, and the archaeologists who rediscovered the city in 1847.
All visuals in this video are AI reconstructions based on archaeological evidence and Assyrian palace reliefs.
