In 1846, warning signs appeared on the Dee Bridge in Chester, England. A cast-iron girder developed cracks and had to be replaced. Yet on 24 May 1847, disaster struck: another part of the bridge failed as a train crossed it, sending the structure crashing down.
The Dee Bridge disaster exposed the dangers of relying on cast iron in railway bridge construction and became a major lesson in Victorian engineering history.
How did this bridge fail, what warnings came before the disaster, and what did engineers learn from the tragedy? Discover the story behind one of Britain’s most significant early railway bridge collapses.
