The Spy Beside Him 1947 — The enemy was closer than he ever imagined | Classic Movie Noir

In the peaceful English countryside, Jim Hetherton is a scholarly pacifist still haunted by a childhood accident that claimed the life of his beloved dog. He has renounced violence, even as the shadow of World War II falls across Europe. His brother Roger joins the Royal Air Force, but Jim refuses to fight, becoming a conscientious objector. Into his quiet life comes Dora Bruckmann, a beautiful Austrian refugee who works for his sister-in-law. Jim falls deeply in love with her, and to protect her from being deported, he marries her. What Jim does not know is that Dora is a Nazi agent, planted in England to uncover the location of a secret airfield near the Hetherton estate. As German bombers rain destruction on London, Dora signals them from the darkness, manipulating Jim's pacifist beliefs to serve Hitler's planned invasion. Torn between his love for a woman who is not what she seems and the growing realization of her betrayal, Jim must confront the ultimate question: what is worth fighting for? Directed by Frank Tuttle and based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham, this wartime drama stars Franchot Tone and Veronica Lake in a tense tale of love, deception, and awakening.
