How did Conrad Hilton build a hotel fortune
when so much of the money—and so many of the buildings—belonged to someone else?
In 1919, Hilton arrived in Cisco, Texas, hoping to buy a bank. Instead, he found a hotel renting the same beds three times a day to oil-field workers. From the Mobley's crowded lobby to a million-dollar building in Dallas, each deal raised the same question: who would put up the money, and who would run the hotel?
Then the Depression emptied the rooms. Rent and interest still came due, his company stood behind a loan, and his family's home was a room in the El Paso Hilton. The story follows the bargains, partners and risks behind the Palmer House, the Waldorf-Astoria and the Hilton name overseas. What did it really mean to buy a famous hotel—and whose savings were on the line?
Drawing on historical reporting, biographical research, foundation histories and SEC filings, the film follows the money alongside the people: Hilton, his family, his backers and those whose losses made bargains possible. Their choices deserve a fair hearing; the judgment is yours.
