The saber-toothed cat had massive fangs but a weak bite. See how this predator survived for millions of years.
The saber-toothed cat had 18-centimetre fangs yet possessed a bite force only a third as strong as a modern lion. This discrepancy makes the Smilodon one of the most intriguing subjects in palaeontology. We examine the anatomy of its skull, neck, and arms to understand how it effectively hunted prey much larger than itself.
By analysing fossils from the La Brea Tar Pits and recent computer simulations, we can piece together the hunting methods of these prehistoric predators. You will see how their physical build allowed them to thrive, challenging the assumption that they were built to fail. The evidence left in bite marks on ancient bones reveals a highly specialised hunter that dominated its environment.
