Hidden in a D.C. alley in the 1920s was the Krazy Kat, a speakeasy with a treehouse bar, hot jazz, police raids, and a crowd of artists, flappers, and queer Washingtonians who found a safe haven there. This spooky season, I'm going back to where it stood to tell its story. We'll meet Cleon "Throck" Throckmorton, the set designer who ran the Kat, and Kat Mullin, his muse, a saber fencer billed as "The Girl With the Million Dollar Legs." We'll trace the winter of 1922, when a wedding and a deadly snowstorm changed everything. Then we'll head back to the kitchen to make a Prohibition-style cocktail and a speakeasy snack tray, deviled eggs included. 🕰️ CHAPTERS 0:00 What do these things have in common? 0:18 Welcome to the Krazy Kat 3:17 Cocktails & speakeasy snacks 12:10 The winter of 1922 15:10 The ghost of Green Court 🍸 RECIPES Bee's Kee's 1 oz of honey syrup 1 oz lemon juice 2 oz gin shake over ice strain enjoy 📚 SOURCES & FURTHER READING Jeb and Dash: A Diary of Gay Life, 1918–1945, edited by Ina Russell Library of Congress, National Photo Company Collection The Washington Post (1919) and The Washington Times (1922) archives Knickerbocker Theatre history: Kevin Ambrose, The Knickerbocker Snowstorm 📸 CREDITS Historic photos courtesy of the Library of Congress, National Photo Company Collection.
