2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, with Rail 200 celebrating the famous line. Opened on the 27th of September, 1825, the efforts of George Stephenson and Edward Pease made it a turning point in history - the first public railway to use steam locomotives. In Part 1 of this series, we look at what led to its construction. Why was it built, and what made it so special?
