If there's a strip of lawn you mow every Saturday and nobody ever walks on: https://thesmallgardenbook.com
The Small Garden has the chapter on reading your covenant, the one on keeping the lawn your kids actually use, and the one-tsubo bed that goes where the grass used to be.
379 pages, 88 chapters, every claim sourced. $47 early-bird, 30-day refund.
I grew up in a Japanese house. I've now lived in America longer than I lived in Japan.
Everyone tells you the Japanese way with a garden is patience, some kind of calm. It isn't. My mother has never killed a lawn because she has never owned one. What she has is a calendar, and the American extension services already agree with it.
I go through six steps, every one of them done this fall: the paperwork, the timing, the cardboard, the last mow, the line you draw, and the step where you do nothing at all. The last thing in the video is a question my mother asked me on the phone once, and it's the reason this has to happen before winter.
The lawn wins one round, properly. A lawn a child can play on is a real thing and nothing else in a yard does that job, so the play patch stays. This works almost anywhere fall rain does the watering, but bermuda and zoysia down South won't die in one winter, and in the dry West you'll be soaking the cardboard yourself and applying for any turf rebate before the grass is dead.
If you make it to the end, leave one word in the comments: done. And tell me which part of your lawn nobody walks on. If you've ever tried to kill a lawn before and it came back, tell me how it got you.
For inside the house, the rooms, the habits, the systems, that's my main channel, Two Houses: @kentsukamoto
