As Lahore Darbar descends into intrigue, assassinations and competing claims to the throne, figures including Kharak Singh, Nau Nihal Singh, Chand Kaur, Sher Singh, the Dogra brothers, Hira Singh, Jawahar Singh and Peshora Singh shape an increasingly unstable Punjab. At the centre of this struggle emerges Rani Jindan. When the young Duleep Singh becomes Maharaja, Jind Kaur refuses to remain a ceremonial mother behind the throne. As Regent, she enters the political arena, confronts powerful courtiers and builds a relationship with the Khalsa Army. Part 1 ends at one of the most dramatic moments of her life: Jawahar Singh is killed by the Khalsa Army before Rani Jindan’s eyes.
