Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance is one of Hong Kong's most iconic Mid-Autumn traditional celebrations, boasting a history of over a century and listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage. The fire dragon is about 67 meters in total length, consisting of a dragon head, a dragon tail, and 31/32 body segments, operated by nearly 300 athletes working together. The dragon body uses thick hemp rope as its axis, while the dragon head and tail are crafted by tying rattan branches and covering them with pearl grass. The entire dragon is stuck full of over 12,000 longevity joss sticks, weaving and shuttling through the night sky to create a deeply stunning spectacle. After the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance event concludes, staff members may pull out the burned joss sticks (also known as "dragon incense") from the fire dragon's body and distribute them to citizens present at the scene. Since the over 10,000 joss sticks on the fire dragon have burned during the hours-long ceremony and have absorbed the "aura" of the fire dragon as well as its power to ward off evil and suppress malevolent forces, bringing the "dragon incense" home symbolizes bringing blessings and good fortune into the household, praying for family safety and favorable fortune. Distributing the dragon incense also signifies extending the fire dragon's auspicious meaning of pestilence elimination and house protection to every household, driving away bad luck. In addition to the main fire dragon, there are also performances on site such as LED small fire dragons danced by children, small glowing parades, and traditional drum formations. The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance originated from an epidemic in 1880 (the sixth year of the Guangxu reign). At that time, Tai Hang was a Hakka village, and an epidemic claimed the lives of many villagers. It is said that a villager advocated using a fire dragon fitted with joss sticks, accompanied by spiritual talismans, gongs, and drums to drive away the plague. Miraculously, the plague subsequently subsided. Since then, the residents of Tai Hang have held the fire dragon dance event every Mid-Autumn Festival, passing it down from generation to generation to this day, evolving into a custom praying for community-wide peace. At the end of the event (the final night of the Chung Chau festival), the fire dragon will traditionally perform the "dragon returning to heaven" ceremony, being sent to the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter, symbolizing sending away the impurities within the community. Music by https://pixabay.com/users/alex-morgan...
