In February 1943 the Red Army walked into Kharkov as victor. Five weeks later a smaller German army group under Manstein took it back, after letting two Soviet fronts run out of fuel.
How did the weaker side retake Kharkov after Stalingrad, and why could it go no further? We follow the Third Battle of Kharkov: the Soviet offensives Star and Gallop, Popov's tank corps stranded without fuel, the backhand blow that hit the Soviet flank on 20 February, the SS Panzer Corps fighting into the city street by street, and the thaw that ended the campaign. The map and the numbers come from Ziemke and Menning. Where sources disagree, we give a range.
