AI agents need memory to retain information from previous interactions, track progress, and maintain context while performing tasks. Unlike traditional chatbots that primarily respond to individual requests, AI agents often carry out complex, multi-step activities that require remembering earlier decisions, user preferences, completed actions, and unresolved problems. Memory allows agents to avoid repeating tasks, maintain consistency, personalize responses, and adapt their actions based on previous outcomes. For example, an HR onboarding agent can remember which employee documents have already been submitted, which approvals are pending, and what actions remain incomplete. Without memory, the agent may lose track of its progress, repeat activities, or make decisions without considering earlier information. Thus, memory supports continuity, efficiency, and reliable decision-making, enabling AI agents to manage workflows over time rather than treating every interaction as an entirely new task.
