Shabads are hymns or spiritual poems written by saints and mystics from different spiritual traditions of the Indian subcontinent. The shabads convey a deep message of truth and are sung with heartfelt devotion. They express the intense longing of the soul for union with the Lord. These songs of devotion are prayers that inspire the true seeker to turn inwards to contact the ultimate Truth – the inner divine music that reverberates within every being. Dear Lord, I have taken refuge in you. Those who do not come under your shelter are lost in delusion and wander in misery. Dear Lord, I have taken refuge in you. Others believe in gods and goddesses, but your devotion alone delights my heart. Ever since I gained understanding in this world, I have not bowed my head to anyone else. Dear Lord, I have taken refuge in you. When I heard that even kings and the lord of all gods place their hope in you, I came running to you. I renounced the fruits of all pilgrimages and penances, and now my mind is focused solely at your lotus feet. Dear Lord I have taken refuge in you. Even the sage Narad and the gods Shiva, Brahma, and the rest all contemplate upon you. True from the beginning, O Lord, you are eternal; throughout the ages, the Vedas and the Puranas have sung your glory. Dear Lord, I have taken refuge in you. O Lord, why do you not take hold of my hand now – why have you forgotten me? You are the Creator, says Charandas; this is what Sukdev, my Guru, has taught me. Dear Lord, I have taken refuge in you.
