To stop the main driver of the climate crisis, the rapid phase-out of fossil fuels remains top priority. For certain areas of use such as steel production and transport by sea and air, hydrogen and its derivatives will likely play a key role. Up to now, the focus for the energy transition of these sectors has been on green hydrogen produced by electrolysis on the basis of electricity from renewable energy sources. However, this remains an expensive and scarce solution.
Recent reports have drawn attention to geogenic hydrogen—naturally formed deep within the Earth. This resource could provide a cheaper and more accessible alternative. However, significant questions remain about its potential, feasibility, and risks. Beyond the promise, tapping into geogenic hydrogen requires substantial research, policy frameworks, and environmental protection measures.
In this webinar, geologist Stefan Cramer presented his latest findings, offering a first overview of the current state of knowledge. We critically examined whether geogenic hydrogen can realistically contribute to a clean energy future — or if it risks becoming another overhyped solution with significant challenges and uncertainties.
