How big is the Andromeda Galaxy, really, and why does the answer keep changing the more precisely astronomers measure it? On a clear, dark night far from city lights, you can see another galaxy with nothing but your own two eyes, a faint smudge near the constellation Andromeda that is, in reality, home to something like a trillion stars. The light entering your eye left those stars 2.5 million years ago, long before anything resembling a modern human walked the Earth.
This episode traces how that single smudge kept getting bigger the more carefully it was studied: appearing about six full moons wide in the sky once its true distance was finally measured, a discovery in 2007 using ultraviolet light that revealed a faint stellar halo extending far beyond the bright visible disk astronomers had measured for eighty years, the spectroscopy that revealed as early as the 1900s, decades before anyone even knew Andromeda was a separate galaxy, that it is moving toward the Milky Way, and the two galaxies' eventual merger, currently expected in roughly four to five billion years. Every time astronomers thought they had finally measured the edge of the thing, the edge moved.
