Die Hörn bezeichnet die südliche Spitze der Kieler Förde und war über viele Jahrzehnte ein von Werften, Hafenanlagen und Industrie geprägtes Gebiet. Hier befand sich unter anderem die berühmte Germaniawerft, die zu den bedeutendsten Schiffbauunternehmen Deutschlands gehörte und insbesondere für den Bau von U-Booten bekannt war. Nach dem Niedergang der Werftindustrie begann Ende der 1980er-Jahre eine umfassende Umgestaltung des Areals. Aus ehemaligen Industrieflächen entstand im Rahmen der Kai-City Kiel ein modernes Quartier mit Wohnungen, Büros, Hotels, Promenaden und öffentlichen Plätzen. Herzstück dieser Entwicklung ist der 1998 eröffnete Germaniahafen, ein rund 130 Meter langes Hafenbecken für Gastsegler und Traditionsschiffe, das heute auch den Museumshafen beherbergt. Die markante Hörnbrücke verbindet seit 1997 das Westufer am Hauptbahnhof mit Gaarden-Ost und gilt mit ihrem einzigartigen dreiteiligen Klappmechanismus als technische Besonderheit. Entlang der Uferpromenaden laden Cafés, Sitzstufen und Aussichtspunkte zum Verweilen ein, während regelmäßig Fähren, Kreuzfahrtschiffe und Frachter die Hörn passieren. Besonders während der Kieler Woche entwickelt sich das Gebiet zu einem lebendigen Veranstaltungsort. The Germaniahafen and the Kieler Hörn form one of Kiel’s most distinctive waterfront districts, combining maritime heritage with modern urban development. The Hörn marks the southern end of the Kiel Fjord and was dominated for more than a century by shipyards, port facilities, and heavy industry. Among the most important companies located here was the Germania Shipyard, one of Germany’s leading shipbuilders and particularly well known for constructing submarines. Following the decline of shipbuilding, the area underwent a major transformation beginning in the late 1980s. As part of the Kai-City Kiel redevelopment project, former industrial land was converted into a modern waterfront district featuring apartments, offices, hotels, promenades, and public spaces. At the heart of this redevelopment is the Germaniahafen, a harbor basin completed in 1998 that is approximately 130 meters long and now serves visiting yachts, traditional sailing vessels, and Kiel’s museum harbor. Since 1997, the iconic Hörn Bridge has linked the city center near the central station with Gaarden on the eastern shore. Its unique three-part folding design makes it one of the most unusual pedestrian bridges in the world. The surrounding waterfront promenades, cafés, viewing areas, and public spaces have become popular destinations for both residents and visitors, while ferries, cruise ships, and cargo vessels regularly pass through the harbor.
