Why would scientists search a whale’s stomach to understand deep-sea squid? In one sperm whale’s stomach, researchers counted more than 18,000 squid beaks. These hard fragments can survive digestion, giving scientists evidence of animals that are difficult to observe alive. This video follows how researchers identify squid from their beaks, estimate the size of the prey, and investigate where a whale may have fed. It also explores the limits of that evidence—from changing species names to uncertain age estimates. Some scenes are reconstructions or explanatory graphics; they do not show the historical specimens discussed. Research and sources: Cherel (2021); Malcolm R.
