For decades, Exhibition Stadium was one of Toronto’s most recognizable sports venues — and one of its most criticized. Built on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition, the stadium hosted football, baseball, concerts, and some of the biggest sporting moments in the city’s history. It became home to the Toronto Argonauts and, beginning in 1977, Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays. But almost from the beginning, the problems were obvious. The stadium sat exposed beside Lake Ontario, leaving fans and players vulnerable to bitter winds, rain, snow, and sudden temperature changes. Its unusual multi-purpose design created awkward sightlines, distant seats, and a baseball configuration that often felt temporary. Some spectators were seated so far from the action that Exhibition Stadium developed a reputation as one of the least comfortable major sports venues in North America. And yet, people kept coming.
