00:00 Introduction 00:38 The Idea 01:22 Rearranging the Sump 02:57 Bringing Life to The Sump 04:12 A Second Living Ecosystem 05:26 The Biological Benefits 07:13 Conclusion What if your sump could become a second reef aquarium? In this episode of Reef Philosophy, I’m starting a new project: transforming the space beneath my 350-litre reef tank into a miniature coral reef. Because I don’t use a protein skimmer, GFO, UV sterilizer, chemical reactors or automatic dosing systems, my sump has something unusual: plenty of free space. Rather than filling it with more equipment, I’ve decided to fill it with more life. In Part 1, I’ll show you how I’ve rearranged the plumbing, repositioned my waterfall algae filter and installed an old Zetlight UFO to prepare the sump for its new inhabitants. But this project isn’t just about aesthetics. The idea is to explore whether a second coral garden can contribute to nutrient uptake, support biodiversity and potentially help stabilize pH by running its lighting on a reverse schedule to the main aquarium. In Part 2, I’ll introduce the first corals, create the miniature reef and start observing the results. Sometimes, simplifying a reef aquarium isn’t about doing less. It’s about making room for nature to do more. Welcome to Reef Philosophy, exploring a simpler, more natural approach to reefkeeping.
