In this video, I walk you through a complete DIY ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) drain and fill on a 2013 Hyundai Elantra equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
🚗 Vehicle: 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS
🧰 Tools Used: 3/8" Ratchet, Drain Pan, Torque Wrench, 24mm Socket, Breaker Bar, Pittsburgh Manual Pump
🛢️ Fluid Used: AISIN SP-IV ATF
🔁 This is part of a multi-step drain and fill series to gradually refresh the old ATF without performing a full flush. My car had 164k miles and had never had a fluid change, so I’m doing this 3 times — at ~200- and ~600-mile intervals.
⚠️ Important: This is not a full flush. Each drain removes about 3 quarts out of 7. Repeat the procedure multiple times, with driving in between, to achieve cleaner results.
📍 Mileage of First Drain: 163,981
📍 Second Drain (this video): 164,324
📍 Planned Third Drain: TBD (after ~600–800 miles)
🔧 Benefits after the first drain:
✔️ Smoother shifts
✔️ Improved throttle response
✔️ No transmission issues before or after
🧠 Pro Tip: Always warm up the transmission (ATF temp 122–140°F) before draining to ensure the fluid flows out properly.
