2026 Kandy Esala Perahara - First kumbal perahara

The First Kumbal Perahera is an important part of the annual Kandy Esala Perahera, one of the most famous Buddhist and cultural festivals in Sri Lanka. It is held in the historic city of Kandy in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, which is enshrined at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The First Kumbal Perahera is the first of five Kumbal processions and marks the beginning of the main public processions of the festival. Before the Kumbal Perahera begins, an important traditional ceremony called Kap Situweema is performed. During this ceremony, a sacred young jack tree is planted at the four main Devales of Kandy: Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini. This ritual is performed to seek blessings, protection and prosperity for the country and its people. After the religious ceremonies are completed, the processions from the four Devales join the procession of the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The First Kumbal Perahera then moves through the streets of Kandy in the evening. It features many traditional elements of Sri Lankan culture, including beautifully decorated elephants and tuskers, Kandyan dancers, traditional drummers, flag bearers, whip crackers and torch bearers. The rhythmic sound of drums, colourful costumes, traditional dancing and illuminated streets create a magnificent atmosphere for spectators. The participation of elephants, especially the ceremonial tusker carrying the sacred casket, adds great religious and cultural significance to the procession. Compared with the later Randoli Perahera, the Kumbal Perahera is relatively simple and less elaborate. However, it is extremely important because it introduces the public to the religious and cultural traditions of the festival. The first few nights gradually prepare the way for the grand final processions, which attract thousands of local and foreign visitors. The Kandy Esala Perahera has a long historical connection with the ancient Kandyan Kingdom and the worship of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Over the centuries, the Perahera has developed into a major cultural event while maintaining its religious traditions. The First Kumbal Perahera therefore represents more than a colourful procession; it is a living expression of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage, Kandyan traditions and cultural identity.
