Here you can see a Gardner 4T5 semi-diesel or suface ignition engine, also known as "Hot Bulb."
It is started by heating the cylinder heads and then turned over on compressed air, the pre heat time being 4 minuits.
The engine works on the two stroke prinicple and the valve gear on the side shafts is simply for the air start and lubricator sytems.
This engine was built in 1925 and used to generate electricity and the engine produces 75HP at 400RPM.
You can see this marvelous engine at the Anson Engine Museum of which I recomend a visit!
