Let All God's Angels Worship Him | Hebrews 1:4-7 | The Superior Name of Jesus Christ
What does it mean that Jesus inherited a name "superior" to the angels? In this teaching on Hebrews 1:4-7, we continue the author's opening argument for the supremacy of Christ, tracing a chain of Old Testament quotations that build a powerful case: Jesus is not one of the angels, not even the greatest among them — He is the Son they are commanded to worship.
"So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs." — Hebrews 1:4
The author doesn't simply assert this claim; he proves it from Scripture itself, quoting Psalm 2, 2 Samuel 7, Deuteronomy 32, and Psalm 104 in rapid succession. Each quotation sharpens the contrast between the nature of angels — created, serving, flame-like in their swiftness — and the nature of the Son, who alone is worshipped and addressed as God's own.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
"The name he has inherited" (v. 4): understanding what this name is and why it establishes Christ's superiority
Why the author compares Jesus to angels at all: the significance of this argument for the original Jewish audience of Hebrews
"You are my Son; today I have become your Father" (v. 5): the background of Psalm 2:7 and its application to Christ
The covenant promise of 2 Samuel 7:14 (v. 5): how God's promise to David points forward to the Son
"Let all God's angels worship him" (v. 6): the striking command for angels to worship the Son when He was brought into the world
What "firstborn" means in this context: understanding this title as one of rank and preeminence, not origin
"He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire" (v. 7): unpacking this quotation from Psalm 104:4 and what it reveals about the nature and role of angels
The contrast between servants and Son: why angels are described in terms of function and swiftness, while the Son is addressed in terms of eternal identity
How this chain of quotations builds the author's larger argument: setting up the rest of Hebrews 1 and the full case for Christ's supremacy
