Pakistan has just been elected chair of the Borrowers' Platform – a new UN-backed group of over 30 developing countries facing debt pressure. But here's the puzzle: Pakistan's debt-to-GDP ratio is around 68%, while Japan's is over 200%, the USA's is 126% and India's is about 83%. So why is Pakistan in a debt crisis while they are not?
In this discussion, analyst Mukhtar Ahmed Ali explains the real cause of Pakistan's debt trouble: not how much it borrows, but in which currency. He compares Pakistan's debt structure with India's, shows why dollar debt is so dangerous, and outlines what Pakistan must do to escape the debt trap.
