The tabla (paired hand drums) is the primary percussion instrument of Northern Indian classical and semi-classical music. Comprising of a "baya" (left hand - bass drum) and "tabla" (right hand - pitched treble drum), the instrument is capable of producing a variety of distinct, tonal, and percussive sounds covering the gamut from low growing inflections to staccato torrential flurries to bell-like tones. The right hand drum is one of only two drums in the world (both North Indian) capable of producing an accurate pitch with no conflicting overtones. The pitch of the left hand is varied by using combination of pressure and moving strokes. The instrument is played primarily with fingers and an accomplished musician is capable of producing percussive music of the highest virtuosic and mathematical complexity, as well as musical expression ranging from the lyrical to the dance-like to the torrential and ferocious. A tabla solo is usually performed in one particular meter or rhythmic cycle (Tala) which is repeated throughout the duration of the solo. The percussionist is accompanied by a melody instrumentalist who marks time by repeating a specific line over and over. The material of a table solo generally follow the pattern of theme and variation and many different types of the form, each having a specific category. Improvisations and strict compositions make up the remainder of the performance.
