An original fictional story. People, creatures and places are invented; visuals and voices are AI-generated.
The Arctic Ocean, summer 1881. A whaling ship is frozen fast in the sea ice, and when the sun first sets, the sea will lock it in for the winter. Every night, something circles the ship, leaving round footprints and a tuft of ginger wool behind.
Out on the ice, Abigail Hale, the captain's wife, finds what made them: a woolly mammoth calf. It leads her to an island that is on no chart, and to a whole herd of woolly mammoths that should have vanished thousands of years ago. She names the calf Nutmeg, and the greens it shows her put the ship's sick crew back on their feet.
But the food is running out. The first mate, Mr. Kell, has counted the barrels: food for nine men, and there are seventeen. When he learns that the big ones follow the calf, he decides the calf is their road out.
To keep it safe, Abigail sends Nutmeg home. Then the sun sets for the first time, the sea locks, and the pressure ice closes in. When Kell lures Nutmeg away with a ship's biscuit, only one thing can bring the calf back: Abigail's voice, calling its name.

Woolly mammoths really did survive on Wrangel Island in the Arctic until about 4,000 years ago (Vartanyan, Garutt & Sher, Nature, 1993). In 2007, a mammoth calf was found almost perfectly preserved in the Siberian permafrost of the Yamal Peninsula (Fisher et al., Quaternary International, 2012).
