We first met and filmed an interview together two years ago. Since then, P has rewatched our original video nearly every day. P was adopted after spending the beginning of her life in an orphanage, and she continues to experience trauma connected to those early years. Her parents explain that when P is struggling with these memories, she often watches our first interview to cheer herself up, feel grounded, and return to a moment that brings her joy. When I arrived for our follow-up interview, P called me "Uncle" and wanted us to recreate many of the things we did together during our first visit. Learning how meaningful that video has become to her reminded me why these interviews matter. Sometimes, being seen, accepted, and celebrated can continue helping a person long after the cameras stop recording.
