Watch the Old Capital fade into the stars as this 4K steampunk adventure begins. At midnight, high above the stratosphere, a sleeper starship casts off for the Outer Colonies, past nebulae, ice worlds and the light of twin suns. Aboard, passengers in Edwardian dress; outside, stations grown in living Art Nouveau. A slow ambient sci-fi voyage, carried the whole way by original music written for it. Have you ever boarded at dusk and stepped off, four sleeps later, onto a world that was not your own? It begins in the Old Capital. The Sky Trains station fills with elegant travellers, and across the same city a passenger craft rises quietly from its mooring tower. Both are bound for the one place every voyage passes through: the Stratosphere Station, suspended in space, from which all departures for the solar system and the universe beyond it begin. The Sleeper Starship takes on her passengers at midnight. Among them, a young woman in a dotted cream dress, her hair the colour of copper, settles into her berth by the window and closes her eyes. Four stops are printed on the itinerary, and she will sleep through nearly all of them. Lusel is the first, a great port built upon a slow-drifting rock, where cranes and drones swing containers into the hold beneath long strings of light, and new travellers climb aboard. Then comes the Frozen Colony, a monumental plain of ice where a handful of passengers in white furs step down toward a palace of carved frost and are lost to the cold before the doors have closed. Then the Green Colony, a single glasshouse turning alone in the black, warm with leaves and lantern light, where its keeper comes aboard with a bright bird at her shoulder and her quiet flock behind her. Between the stations the voyage asks nothing of you. Nebulae unfold and close. Planets pass and fall behind. Luminous creatures drift alongside the hull as if keeping company, and now and then another fleet crosses the distance on some errand of its own. Every colony wears its own architecture, Art Nouveau grown outward into the vacuum, ironwork and coloured glass built for a sky with no horizon to hold it. And at last a different light finds the cabin. Two suns rise together over the Lavender Planet, the final stop, and the sleepers stir and wake. The young woman in the dotted dress opens her eyes. She goes down the worn stone steps of the landing platform with a case in each hand, her copper hair loose in the wind, and walks out between the long rows of lavender toward the fields she was born in. Retrofutura is a record of the timeline where the wars never came and progress stayed beautiful. Take the window seat. No one will wake you before the second sun.
