Welcome back to the gaming channel! Today we’re trying something new with The Oregon Trail, a modern take on the classic game famous for broken wagons, dangerous river crossings, dwindling supplies, and, of course, dying of dysentery. This is my first real playthrough beyond the tutorial, so we’ll be learning the game as we go. Since I’ve read quite a bit about the real Oregon Trail, including firsthand accounts from emigrants who made the journey, I’ll also be mixing some real history into the gameplay, looking at where the game gets the experience right, where it takes liberties, and some of the real people, places, technology, and dangers behind what we encounter. In this first episode, we assemble our wagon party, spend perhaps a little too much money on a heavy-duty wagon, stock up on what supplies we can afford, and set out from Independence, Missouri in 1849. Along the way we hunt buffalo, encounter some colorful characters, discuss real Oregon Trail firearms and travel practices, and face our first major obstacle: crossing the Kansas River. Can we make it all the way to Oregon, or will disease, accidents, bad decisions, and plain old bad luck bring the journey to an early end? In this episode: Building our first wagon party Choosing a wagon and supplies Setting out from Independence in 1849 Real history of Oregon Trail wagons, oxen, weapons, and river crossings Meeting mountain man Moses Harris A very unexpected encounter with an early flying machine Hunting buffalo for desperately needed food and pelts Reaching and crossing the Kansas River Trying to balance historical common sense against video-game logic #TheOregonTrail #OregonTrail #Gaming #HistoryGaming #HistoricalGames #LetsPlay #OregonTrailGame
