As part of the France/Luxembourg 2026 cross-border research and creation residency, organised jointly by La Malterie Arts Visuels (Lille) and the Bridderhaus, French artist Gabriel Folli was in residence in Esch-sur-Alzette while Charl Vinz spend his time in Lille, both focusing their work on the industrial part of these two areas.
Gabriel (born in 1990 in Chauny, France) graduated from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Picardie Jules Verne (2015). He develops systems that hybridise processes and images, giving rise to composite drawings that blend personal narratives, historical fragments and visual archives. His practice relies in particular on the reuse and use of discarded materials, creating multiple transitions between past and present. His recent projects include residencies and exhibitions at Le Bel Ordinaire in Pau and the Musée Jenisch in Vevey. His drawings will soon be presented at Drawing Now Paris with Galerie La Ferronnerie.
He develops systems for hybridising processes and images to the point of producing the most composite drawings imaginable, evoking personal narratives or historical events, drawing on waste and reuse but also on a visual archive that multiplies the transitions between past and present.
Charl focused on two buildings, former food co-operatives: one, L’Union de Lille, founded by workers in the Lille-Moulins neighbourhood; the other, Koperativ Lëtzebuerg, founded by railway workers in Luxembourg. Both buildings are now occupied by a supermarket.
This residency was supported by the Institut Français in Paris and the City of Lille, the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture and the City of Esch-sur-Alzette.
In residence, summer 2026.
